Life... is a mystery. A mystery which revolves around not only life it self but every single individual who is living life. Every single being has his/her own story; has his/her own faith on which they live the life; has his/her own beloved whom they want to protect with own life and his/her own mystery which binds together with other lives like a puzzle. And this book, my friend, is exactly about this. Mystery weaved around life with faith and beloved at stakes.
The story starts with a blood clad man named Mangal who is running away after stealing gold from his master’s home and setting the house on fire. As he drifted off to sleep after successfully catching an open wagon, he heard a voice which is giving a curse to his family; mainly to the male members of his family. This part itself intrigued me a lot and prepared me for a thrilling journey.
But was it all thrill and fast paced? No. The first half of the book seemed to me more like a narration of people’s lives rather than some nail-biting thriller. To me, some parts are unnecessary to the plot from the first half. Though I can’t ignore that a few parts among those unnecessarily parts are needed to get a clear understanding of the story. But the second half kept me intrigued till the end.
Cleverly written, this story keeps on giving you clues. It’s as if the mystery is open yet it’s close; a constant wrecking of your mind. The author has beautifully portrayed the characters which are relatable in our daily lives, one such is strong female characters. The author here has brought instances of various real-life violence and bloodshed incidents and created a fiction out of it. Along with that betrayal, desires, emotions, striving for life; and most importantly rape. Though portraying rape as a sexual fantasy did tick me off and made me want to put the book down, but I can understand why it was necessary in the book.
Altogether, it’s a good mystery thriller with lots of twists and turns. This book may not be one-read book but it’ll make you feel as if you are in the book as you read every incident from different characters’ perspective.
